Lempuyang Temple is one of the greatest tourist spots in Bali known for the legendary “ THE GATEWAY OF HEAVEN”. The complete name of Lempuyang Temple is PURA PENETARAN AGUNG LEMPUYANG TEMPLE. This is the oldest Balinese Hindu temple. The temple is one of the sacred ground from the six holiest places of Bali.
It is renown for the Gateway of Heaven which are huge tall gates of the temple and has an infinite number of staircases. The location of the temple is in the eastern lands of Bali. It is located on the top of Mount Lempuyang. From where the name of the temple is derived to be The Lempuyang Temple.
Pura Penetaran Agung Lempuyang Temple is one of the six holiest grounds of Bali. Lempuyang Temple is the part of the SAD KAHYANGAN JAGAD, which is also known as the six sanctuaries of the world. The actual meaning of Sad Kahyangan is derived from Sanskrit words that are “sad” which means “six” and “kahyangan” means “Place of God”.
The other of the six holiest places are the PURA BESAKIH, PURA GUA LAWAH, PURA BATUKARU, PURA PUSERING JAGAT, PURA ULUWATU and PURA PENTARAN AGUNG LEMPUYUNG. According to the ancient Balinese believes these six holiest places are the spiritual balancing energy points of Bali.
When Bali was established, the majority of the population was Hindu and these six legendary Hindu temples are the most sacred and most visited places of Bali. Each temple is built in such a way that it represents a particular direction. The Lempuyang Temple is the highest of order among all the other temples and it represents the east (purwa) direction which is also associated with The God Ishwara.

The temple is located on the slope of the Mount Lempuyang which is about 600m above sea level.
Mount Lempuyang is the most sacred mountain of Bali as the great temple Lempuyang Temple is situated on this mountain. This temple is the highest of the order of the SAD KAHYANGAN.
According to the Balinese cosmology, this mountain is divided into majorly three sections that are
- Base – Sang Ananta Bhoga
- Middle – Sang Naga Basukih
- Top – Sang Naga Takasaka
The base that is Sang Naga Taksaka stands for the Brahma, the middle that is Sang Naga Basukih stands for the Vishnu and the top that is Sang Naga Taksha stands for the Shiva.

Things You Will Find At Lempuyang Temple
You must have seen the beauty of the grand GATEWAY OF HEAVEN in pictures but the experience of the gateway during the time of sunset or sunrise is so soul-satisfying that you could never be able to erase that scene from your memories. The temple comprises of mainly two sections that are the lower and upper sections. The upper section is the one that involves climbing thousands of stairs to the gates of heaven.
After reaching the temple you can enjoy the grand view of the Mount Agung. The dense forests present all around the temple will fill you with so much freshness. These forests are also known as the lungs of Bali. To reach this scenic beauty of the temple, you have to climb up to 1500 staircases. This trekking will be persuading but once you will reach the gates it will be worthy.
The place is very humid but it won’t make you wet even while the clouds will pass by you on the mountain. There are clumps of bamboo that grow on the top of the Lempuyang mountain. There are only three grooves of such bamboo and they are said to be sacred. There is a mystery of holy water from these sacred bamboos.
The priest of Pura Tirta Lempuyang Luhur used to cut the bamboo from a certain place and from there they collect TIRTA ( holy water). The priest does this for the people who pray or perform certain rituals over there. They also do that for the tourists if they pray and wish to take a sip of holy water. The mystery is such that even though the bamboo is cut from certain places several times but it never stops growing.
How to Reach to Lempuyang Temple
The location of the Lempuyang Temple is Banjur Purwa Ayu, Tribuana Village, Abang Subdistrict, Karangasem Regency, Bali, Indonesia.
The Lempuyang Temple is located on the Lempuyang Mountain which is about 1175 m above sea level.
Mostly the tourists land on the Denpasar Ngurah Rai International Airport. So if you are coming from that way you just have to cover 89km of distance towards the east by car. The journey goes through Prof. Dr Ida Bagus Mantra. If you are coming from Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Kuta and Seminyak then you have to travel to the east and depending on the traffic it might take you about 2-3 hours.
There is no public transport available to this area of Bali so the best way to reach here is by hiring a car with a driver. In this way, you can also explore all other areas of eastern Bali. The other areas that you can visit along with the Lempuyang Temple are Tirta Gangga, Taman Ujung Water Palace, Candidasa and many more.
Temple Opening Hours
The temple is opened from 9 am to 6 pm for the visitors or tourists. But when it comes to the spiritual or religious reasons, the temple gates are wide open 24 hours for all those who want to worship god. The best time to enter the temple is before sunset as the view of the sunset from the gateway of heaven is so mesmerizing that it will take your heart away.
The time before sunrise is also perfect to feed your soul the beauty of the hours as the crowd is very less and the air seems much pure and feels like reviving your soul as it enters your lungs.
As the place is so sacred and the hearts are also so pure that people are not involved in making any business of the temple. There is no entrance fee for entering the pure premises of the Lempuyang Temple. Although you can make donations on your own. The donations are taken care of by the locals and used for maintaining purposes of the temple.
The priests are very particular about the way you respect the premises of the temple. So, the most important of them all is wear a sarong while visiting the temple and keep your knees and shoulders covered. Try to wear such clothes that will cover your body. Pay respect to god and pray with all your heart.
