Tirta Empul temple is a heritage site and a holy mountain spring situated in the village of Manukaya in Bali, Indonesia. The temple was built in 960 AD in the time of Warmadewa Dynasty.

The temple Tirta Empul means the holy water spring which itself tell everything about the temple and its belives. As you know by the meaning the temple is famous for holy water spring which located in the centre of the temple. The spring feeds many pools, ponds and purification baths located at the temple outer premises.

Then the water of holy spring flows into the Tukad Pakerisan river though these ponds and holy baths. The place has a great value among the locals and their beliefs. The site is has a traditional tale about good versus evil.

The temple is divided into 3 main divisions which are the front, secondary and inner courtyard. As soon you enter the temple you will lager Balinese Gate is known as Candi Bentar and opens in the outer courtyard of the temple. The area of the temple is known as Jaba Pura.

At the end of the courtyard, another gate Candi Bentar is built which leads to the central courtyard of the temple. At the second Candi Bentar, two statues of dwarpals can be seen guarding the gate.

Entering the inner courtyard you will arrive at the main area of the temple called Jaba Tengah. Which is a large pool filled with crystal clear water in which water comes from the 30 waterspouts.

The local Hindus worshipped the temple and belive the temple has holy powers and by taking bath in holy pools one’s sins fade away. Worshipers sarts cleaning themself from the left side of the pool.

They have to clean themself under each waterspout to complete the process of cleansing. Behind the purification, pools are the final section of the Tirta Empul Holy Water Temple, which called as Jeroan.

Inner courtyard of the temple Jeroan is a perfect place to meditate and relax people come in this section to pray and perform rituals. A large clear water fish pond in this section of the courtyard. After the pond, a Large Hindu Shirine is there.

The shrine is beautifully decorated with colourful starched clothes and baskets with offerings which people take who come here to pray. The temple is dedicated to Vishnu, the Hindu god. The temple also has Shirin of Shiva and Brahma in the Tirta Empul Temple.

Visitors first come to temple via beautiful gardens and pathways leads towards the entrance. The temple is considered as one of the top holy temples in Bali.

How to Get To the Tirta Empul Temple

Tirta Empul temple is located at 14 km from the Ubud. To reach the temple it roughly takes 30 to 40 minutes to get there.

The temple is also at 90 minutes drive from the Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport, Indonesia. You can hire a private cab to reach there or you can rent a scooter.

Rent for a scooter can be between 50,000/- IDR to 100000/- IDR a day. The cost maybe changes depend on time and duration. Parking charges are 2000/- IDR

Temple Entry Fee

The entry fee to visit the temple is 15000 IDR per person and can be paid at the entrance booth. Another cost to visit the temple is the locker and sarong charges which are 25000/- IDR and 50000/- IDR donation if you want to seek guidance for a purification ritual. The temple genrally opens at 9:00 AM till 5:00 PM.

Dress Code for the Tirta Empul Tmple

The place also follows a particular dress code which most of the temples follow in Bali. Bring sarong with you or you can take it on rent from the shops situated outside the temple.

Bring an extra pair of clothes

If you are planning to prefer more the purification ritual at the temple then make sure you bring an extra pair of clothes to change later.

Restricted Areas

There are many sections in the temple in which entry of visitors are prohibited. The section is reserved for praying and performing rituals. Make sure you don’t enter those areas.
